SCREENFLICK SET CREEN SIZE FREEI don't know if it still does or if it's been supplanted by ProRes, but I don't think any free solution will let you record losslessly.Mac screen recording with audio, keystrokes, and mouse clicks. I haven't used it in many years but the last time I did, ScreenFlow which is a paid screen recording/presentation app, had an option to record and render out in the Apple Animation Codec, which was a lossless codec for bitmap media like computer displays. Rather save it at the native encoding and import it into FCPX (where it'll be transcoded on render anyway) than render it out of QuickTime in some format. Back in the day before on-CPU h.264 encoding and 5K displays, QuickTime would record in more of a lossless format, but it's all h.264 (mp4) now. Contrast this with going into File -> Export, which I think will transcode it. This will open your recording in a QuickTime Player window.Īt this point if I see a filename in the top bar of the window (like "Screen Recording at 3.56.09 PM.mov") I'll just close the window and go get the file, rename it and move it where I want. While recording, QuickTime puts a circular icon (like a record button) in your menu bar click it to stop recording. Immediately go to the File menu and click New Screen Recording.įrom there you'll see options to adjust a window for the portion of the screen you want to record, an option to record the whole screen, and more. The QuickTime menus will still be in your menu bar but will disappear if you switch to another app. Click "Cancel" on the file open dialog that opens. Start QuickTime Player from Applications. ![]()
